Inspration & Cooking Again

I went to see the movie "Julie Julia" this summer and fell in love with it. I liked it so much I asked for the cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" for Christmas.
The making of this book by Julia Child is the inspiration for the movie. It's a cute movie and well worth seeing if you have not seen it yet. Meryl Streep did a wonderful interpretation of Julia Child.
I got two copies of this cookbook for Christmas, lol. Both my son and my husband got it for me. My son loves for me to cook for him...me thinks I know now why he got it me. He will get the leftovers to take back to school.
First of all I'm not that great of a cook. I can cook but it has never been a passion. I can follow a recipe...wink wink. I usually change the recipe to my liking....adding a little more of this and omitting an ingredient all together. However I have a few recipes that I make very well.
I'm probably like most women of today. It's much easier to buy prepared meals or just go out for dinner. I know my biggest problem was trying to come up with something new each and every evening for the family. I got so burnt out and resentful. I got to the point where I could not stand to cook. I hated it. Now that the kids are gone and it's just me and the hubby it's even harder to cook for two. But anyway something in this movie has inspired me to want to cook again.
This book gives detailed instructions so I'm looking forward to at least..... attempt to learn a few new things.
After skimming through the pages I think that I will definitely need a few new pots and casseroles. Yea! Now a good reason to get rid of some of my old pots and pans I've been using for years.
I have to say the book is a little intimidating. I am going to take my time and do the recipes correctly. I want to savor the experience. I'm not going to blog about it like in the movie....maybe.... if something turns out. hehe.

  1. Bon appetit!! I can smell the coq au vin and the tarte tatin from here!!!

I hear you loud and clear about cooking...ugh!!! I used to enjoy it (to a degree) and yet I too reached burnout stage -- I still have one here who says "oh we're not having THAT are we?" -- and truly, I'm sorry but if you don't give me ideas...then again, that boy's ideas are restaurant and take out!!!!

As for new pots/pans and casseroles...that's a great idea (not just so you get new!!) -- I think truly that what we cook with is as important and mine are OLD...little wonder I hardly feel "inspired"!!!

  2. Oh Charlie...I am totally excited! Please take pics and I'm sure you'll let us know how it works out. I am thinking about changing my cooking habits too and just cooking better in general. I'll encourage you if you'll encourage me...lol And yes...that movie was awesome...love Meryl and yesterday saw "It's complicated", again with Meryl...2 thumbs up. This morning went to Macys to look at cookware...I think you and I are on the the same thinking path.

    have a good one!

  3. I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday, and I LOVED it! I know what you mean re getting burned out cooking; I have 3 kids; two vegetarians and one one who pretty much will ONLY eat meat, lol. I pretty much cook good meals twice a week and then revamp the leftovers......but it does get tiresome :)

  5. I love cooking too. My boyfriend said to me yesterday "your cooking just gets better and better" which nearly made me burst with pride! His idea of cooking is piercing the film and pressing 3 minutes!!
You must share with us how you get on with Julia. I loved that film :)

  6. I enjoyed that movie so much. As a matter of fact my husband did not want to take me but he did as it was my turn to choose and he actually laughed through the same scenes I did. Good luck! Hope the meals are fabulous!
